1- Find Your Why
The first step to getting back on track with the carnivore diet is to find your motivation. Whether it’s to improve a health condition, lose weight, or simply feel better in your body, having a strong “why” will keep you committed for the long haul. Just losing a few pounds won’t keep you motivated for the long term. I don’t think you’re gonna be happy if you just try it for a few days and then say Oh I give up. you have to have a strong why if you want to be successful on the carnivore diet. Remember that the carnivore diet isn’t a short-term fix – it’s a lifestyle and a long-term commitment.
My ‘why’ was to keep my autoimmune disease in check and to avoid getting other autoimmune conditions along the way because they can multiply if you are not careful and take care of your diet and your health. Having that as a goal and not just losing a few pounds has kept me on the carnivore diet for four years. I originally started it just for 30 days and I just kept doing it and it has helped me so much that I put my Hashimoto’s into remission this summer.
So, it’s important to remember your “why” to stay motivated on the carnivore diet. Reflect on your original motivation for starting the diet and the benefits you’ve already experienced. Keeping your goals in mind can help you resist temptations and stay on track for the long-term.
2- Get Rid of the Guilt
If you’ve been indulging in non-carnivore foods, don’t beat yourself up about it. Guilt can make it harder to get back on track. Instead, adopt a fresh start mentality and believe that you’re capable of change. Every day is a new opportunity to make better choices. You have to let go of the guilt over whatever you ate over the holidays or last year or whatever happened in the past. Don’t let old habits dictate new habits, you have to stop believing that story that you are stuck in this way of life that you used to have where you just overeat or you just are addicted to sweets and you can’t stop. All these things are just like a tape running through your head all the time, so don’t believe everything you think and you’ve got to let go of that guilt and just start fresh even if you tumble each day. Believe me, I have started over so many times and it doesn’t matter. How old you are, doesn’t matter. Every day you can have a fresh slate and a clean start.
3- Clean Out Your Fridge
To fully commit to the carnivore diet, it’s important to get rid of any non-compliant foods in your fridge and pantry. This means saying goodbye to any leftover holiday treats or processed junk that may be lingering. So you want to clean out your fridge, go ahead and clean it out, get rid of it, you don’t need that crap. It’s just not going to do you any favors. Consider donating unopened items to a food bank or homeless shelter, so that you’re not tempted to eat them.
4- Go Shopping
With a cleared-out fridge, it’s time to restock with carnivore-friendly foods. Get your new foods as this is not a starvation diet. So you have to go shopping. All animal foods like meat, poultry, fish, and eggs should be your mainstays, along with healthy fats like butter or ghee. If you want to have success you would have to eliminate or reduce dairy to just maybe a condiment eating. A lot of dairy won’t help some people lose weight if that’s the goal.
Consider buying in bulk to save money. I like to go to Sam’s Costco Walmart, get a bunch of steak, get a bunch of chicken, get a bunch of clean sausages and fill up that freezer with all these foods that I can eat on a carnivore diet.
Useful Tip: Always be thawing is the key to success on the carnivore diet. Always keep something thawing for easy meal prep. You always want to have something on the list for thawing, then you have something that is thawing out so you have something that’s ready to eat.
5- Eat to Satiety
One thing you may not be aware of is that unlike other diets, the carnivore diet doesn’t require calorie counting or portion control. So a great tip with the carnivore diet is don’t try to restrict your food. Don’t deprive yourself of food or count calories when you start the carnivore diet in 2023. Instead, you want to eat until you’re full and satisfied, which is a big difference in most diets.
This approach helps to avoid feelings of deprivation and can make it easier to stick with the plan long-term. If you will try to restrict then you’re going to fall off the wagon and crave for sweets and non- carnivore foods. so you want to eat till you’re very full and satisfied with meat and eggs and butter and things like. So, you don’t want to restrict your calories especially when you’re first starting out with a carnivore diet.
6- No Fasting
Make sure to avoid fasting when you want to get back on track with the carnivore diet in 2023. If you’ve fallen off track, the temptation to fast may arise. However, fasting is not recommended when trying to get back into the carnivore diet. Fasting can trigger cravings for sweets, sugary and non-compliant foods, leading to a cycle of restriction and binging. Carnivore promotes satiety and sends the signal of satiety, getting you out of that fight or flight. Fasting puts you right back in it so when you’re fasting you are thinking about all the things you can’t eat and why you can’t have that and you’re probably craving sugar the whole time and you’re just back in that whole deprivation mindset.
Well, carnivore is a feasting mindset, it is about eating, restoring and revitalizing. Put back all those things that you did to yourself when you were doing low calorie diets and yo-yo diets and starving yourself and that is what the whole mentality is about. Carnivore just takes you away from that deprivation and fasting is just going to put you right back in that mindset and I think it sends an unhealthy signal. So maybe if you want to do fasting way down the line after three or six months of doing carnivore. it might be good for you but I don’t think you should fast when you’re first starting a carnivore or when you’re first resuming carnivore diet after you’ve done it for a while. Instead, focus on eating satisfying meals throughout the day.
7- Use Electrolytes to Overcome Sugar Cravings
One of the biggest hurdles when starting the carnivore diet is overcoming sugar cravings. Electrolytes can be a game-changer in this regard. Electrolytes are minerals that can help combat sugar cravings and improve energy levels. In addition to that, electrolytes can also improve digestion, regulate energy levels, and prevent dehydration. Therefore, keeping electrolyte drinks on hand can be very beneficial when starting to get back on the carnivore diet.
One great way to incorporate electrolytes into your carnivore diet is by using Redmond, this electrolyte drink mix provides a tasty and convenient way to replenish your electrolytes with Redmond brand. However, if you don’t want to buy and prefer to make your own electrolyte drink, I also have a recipe on my blog here for how to make your own electrolyte drink and it is very satisfying. You can also find this recipe in my 30 Day Carnivore Diet Challenge e-book here. Use my discount link here for Redmond Relyte.
8- Prioritize Your Sleep
Sleep is often overlooked when it comes to weight loss and dieting, but it is a crucial component to overall health. You may not have gotten regular sleep over the holidays, you may have been drinking alcohol and you may have just completely got off track with your self-care but sleep is going to be so important. When you are sleep-deprived, your body is more likely to hold onto fat and struggle with insulin resistance. This can make it harder to lose weight and reach your health goals.
So if you want your body to know when it’s full and to burn fat properly, you need to sleep. Therefore, prioritizing sleep is essential to mastering the carnivore diet. Aim to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night to promote optimal health and weight loss. You can lose weight just by sleeping alone. You don’t even have to do the carnivore diet but with a good night’s sleep of seven to eight hours and a carnivore diet you’re gonna be hard to stop.
